Cars in Algeria

Car manufacturing in Algeria has developed as a modest but strategically important industrial sector shaped by government policy, domestic demand, and partnerships with international automakers. Production activity has historically appeared in regions such as Oran and other industrial zones where assembly plants have operated through joint ventures with foreign manufacturers. These facilities typically assemble vehicles using imported components while developing local supplier networks that support parts production, logistics, and distribution. Outside these industrial hubs, automotive activity appears through dealerships, repair services, and parts suppliers serving one of the larger vehicle markets in North Africa. The sector has experienced periods of expansion and contraction as regulatory policies regarding imports and domestic production have shifted over time. Compared with dominant industries such as oil and natural gas, car manufacturing represents a smaller but highly visible industrial effort aimed at diversifying Algeria’s economy. Continued development of supplier networks, workforce training, and regulatory stability will determine whether the automotive sector expands further as Algeria seeks to strengthen domestic manufacturing capacity.
