Cars in Cape Verde

Car manufacturing in Cape Verde has not developed as a domestic industry due to the country’s small population, limited industrial base, and island geography. Vehicles used throughout the country are entirely imported, with the automotive sector centered on distribution, maintenance, and transportation services rather than manufacturing. Automotive activity is concentrated in urban areas such as Praia and Mindelo, where dealerships, repair garages, and parts suppliers support vehicles used for tourism, commerce, and everyday mobility. In other parts of the archipelago, vehicle ownership remains more limited and maintenance often depends on small independent mechanics and imported replacement parts. The development of the automotive sector is shaped by shipping logistics, access to international vehicle markets, and the technical skills required to maintain imported vehicles in island environments. Compared with Cape Verde’s dominant economic sectors such as tourism, maritime services, and remittances, automotive activity functions primarily as supporting infrastructure rather than an industrial export sector. As a result, the country’s automotive landscape reflects the realities of small island economies, where vehicles are essential for transportation but large-scale manufacturing remains absent.
