Cycling in Lagos

Cycling in Lagos exists primarily as a recreational and fitness activity rather than a deeply embedded commuter or professional sport. Heavy traffic, limited dedicated bike lanes, and road safety concerns restrict widespread everyday cycling, especially compared to cities with established cycling infrastructure. However, organized cycling groups and weekend riding communities have emerged, often coordinating early-morning rides to avoid congestion. Lagos has hosted cycling events and road races under broader Nigerian federation structures, and competitive cyclists from the region participate in national competitions. Mountain biking is limited due to the city’s terrain, but road cycling remains the dominant form. Growth depends largely on private organization and club culture rather than municipal infrastructure. While not a mainstream urban transport mode, cycling maintains a visible niche presence supported by fitness enthusiasts and organized riding groups within the city.
