Cycling in Papua New Guinea exists but remains limited in scale and infrastructure compared to more established team sports such as rugby league and soccer. The country’s mountainous terrain and challenging road conditions make recreational road cycling less widespread, particularly outside urban areas. However, cycling does appear in competitive contexts through regional events and multi-sport competitions, including Pacific Games participation. BMX and mountain biking are more viable than large-scale road racing due to terrain suitability and lower infrastructure demands. Organized development tends to depend on local initiatives, school programs, and external support rather than a deeply resourced national circuit. While cycling is not a dominant sport within Papua New Guinea’s sporting culture, it maintains a small but genuine presence, particularly among youth and in structured competition settings tied to regional events.
